We Will Go to Paris After All
This is the story of two children from the Children’s Center “Edinstvo” in Zabaikalye, Zoya Chizhkova and Vitaly Tolochkin. They were finalists in the vocal talent show “You Are Super” aired on the television channel NTV.
Vitaly came to the Home in 2012, Zoya in 2011. Zoya arrived with her older brother Petya and her older sister Anna, who now is studying in Ulan Ude at the Railroad College.
Olga Turusheva, a mentor at the Home, recalls, “They were ordinary kids. The kids who come to our center get involved in various interest groups and activities. This is how Vitaly’s and Zoya’s vocal talents came to light. They got involved in programs at the Center as well as in shows in the local town. Zoya’s first major win came in the competition “Guranyonok 2015”.
You Are Super, Indeed!
On February 11, 2015, the NTV Channel aired its first show “You Are Super,” in which the contestants were children left without parental guidance (orphans). “We learned about the project “You Are Super” through an e-mail addressed to our center. We consulted among ourselves and decided that our kids could do this. We believed in them,” continued Olga.
Anna, Zoya’s older sister, went to the completion with Zoya and Vitaly, but she was eliminated in the first round.
The final round of “You Are Super” took place on May 26 at the main concert hall in the Kremlin. Vitaly Tolochkin was one of ten finalists, and he took second place. In May he sang at the Olympic Concert Hall with the pop-rock singer Yolka (Elizavita Ivantsiv). Zoya made it to the semi-finals, but at the gala concert at the end, she was awarded audience favorite.

Olga continued, “After their successes and some rest at “Camp Artek” Zoya and Vitaly returned home. In Chita they were greeted at a warm reception and meeting the Governor, Natalya Zhdanova. In their hometown (Petrovsk-Zabaikalsky) they were met at the station by well-wishers with signs, flowers, and presents. The kids began to get invitations to perform. The concerts began and in the villages and towns (not just in our region) they were received with sold-out performances and great applause.
At a meeting held before the Governor’s reception with the Minister of Health of the Zabaikalsky Krai, Sergei Davydov, Zoya emphatically declared her intention to keep pursuing her singing career. Vitaly, however, at the moment has not decided. As his teachers who were with him at the meeting noted, he has two main interests- singing and soccer. He is trying to decide which of the two is the most important.
The immediate plans for these young stars include another trip to Moscow to film a New Year Holiday concert for NTV.
Moscow is not the only place where Vitaly and Zoya were planning to go. It turns out that were supposed to go to Paris, but it didn’t work out. Olga explains, “They were supposed to fly to Paris in October, but because of problems with their documents, unfortunately they were not allowed to go abroad. However, the organizers of the competition promised them in five years they would be invited again to come to Paris. They are really looking forward to that.”
These two young children have learned firsthand what it means to be flexible. What the future holds for them is difficult to say, but the fact that they have achieved such remarkable success at such a young age speaks volumes. For one, it tells us nothing is impossible.
